a vegan’s June garden in Zone 4a

I don’t have much time to write, as I’m working on pieces for an art show coming up in August, but thought I’d share the progression of my garden so far.

The no-dig garden in the back is doing well.  Despite my initial dismay at how readily the weeds were popping through the hay I laid last year, it’s quite a manageable garden.  It takes just a little hoeing or hand-pulling to deal with the weeds that poke through, and then their foliage is added on top of the mulch.  The main benefit of the heavy straw layer on top of the soil is how well the moisture has been retained.  I try to imagine how much more work it would have been to keep the tomatoes happy if they were in bare sandy soil right now!
